Hi Marla,
First I want to thank you for a great day on Friday. I
greatly appreciated all the info you shared with me and
particularly the demonstrated patience in teaching me
the double hull technique. As I was traveling home
Friday afternoon, I started to plan my next outing.
Beaming with new confidence, I decided to fish two pools
on the
Salmon River that I have never taken trout
from but have witnessed the "wormers" take numerous
fish. I was in luck, no one was there before me on pool
A. Of course, considering sunrise would not break a
while may have something to do with it. I was a tad
pumped up and could not sleep. As I waited, I rigged up
to nymph fish just like we discussed. I could not wait
to hit the water. For the first time in approaching this
pool I knew I was going to be successful! My first drift
yielded zippo, so I adjusted the strike indicator up for
the second pass and before the nymph drifted 5 feet I
was into a 13" rainbow. My excitement carried over to my
fishing buddy Mandy as she began to bark (for the
record, Mandy's my English Springer). I hooked up on 6
more rainbows on successive passes. The curse had been
lifted! My new rod had been christened! I was ready to
tackle pool B, the larger more difficult to fish due to
heavy pressure and access. By the time I got there the
wormers had arrived, and I sat watching them for 20
minutes before getting a chance to make a cast. In that
time, only one fish had been taken and listening to the
mumbling there were no fish left in the pool was going
to make this even sweeter. It took me 3 passes to get
the mend right but on the fourth pass, a very nice
brownie succumbed, followed by 2 rainbows and 1
beautiful brookie. I was totally elated. The walk back
to my truck seemed like 2 minutes as my mind was
whirling running through Friday's information. I can not
thank you enough for sharing the
knowledge and instilling a positive approach to fly
fishing. Stay safe.
Thank you very much,
Dave Kline,
CT April 2008
P.S. - I enjoyed reading your
book. Looking forward to reading your next release.

Good Morning Marla Just a quick note to say Thank you for making my birthday extra special day. I haven't had that much fun fly fishing in a long long time, your knowledge of the sport of Fly fishing is exceptional your enthusiasm was unbelievable. The Farmington River watershed is so lucky to have a person like you to watch over it and to offer help where ever it is needed. We need more people like you Marla on our rivers and streams those trout have a friend in you, there like your kids the love and compassion you show for that river was unbelievable. June 30th will be a day I will not forget for a long time. We had fish coming to my fly almost ever cast there are a lot of sore lips out there lol. Marla your a exceptional guide, but more so a very good teacher of this wonderful sport of Fly Fishing, I am looking forward to next 6/29/08 and 6/30/08. Till then, keep safe and God Bless. P.S you can use this if you want to . Art Davis, Worcester, MA 07'

Dear Marla
I wish to thank you for the "Positive Fly Fishing" experience you have
given me on Tuesday, September 4, 2007.
Your knowledge of the sport is amazing. You have this wonderful
ability to coach every aspect of the cast. I learned so many new fly
fishing tips
from our trip that I plan to put them into practice on my next outing.
I must add that you did put me on lots of quality fish that day.
I hope to book another trip with you in 2008. Again, thanks so much
for the lessons, trip, and a fantastic fly fishing adventure on the
Farmington River.
PS: Lunch was fantastic.
See you next season,
Bob Tetrault, Southwick,MA 07'
Hi Marla,
Many thanks for a thoroughly enjoyable day of Fly fishing the other day.
Your class and lessons were very helpful and enlightening for me and I
hope to use the knowledge on the Swift over the next couple of days.
Thanks so much for your attention and instruction and book signing. I'll
remember the tips for casting and mending and will relax more with my casts.
I subscribe to Smithsonian magazine and they have a nice article in the
August issue on native trout restoration etc. Great photos too. See you soon at
the next TU or WMFTA meeting. Enjoy Alaska.

Hello Marla,
I wanted to thank you for
a wonderful day of fishing. I truly appreciate the patience
you had while teaching me (as well as my sister and father)
how to fly fish. I was hooked (no pun intended)
immediately. It's so very different from bubble and dry fly
and is far more challenging. The rhythm and
technique demand your attention but promise hours of
relaxation (once you master the art) in the great outdoors.
I haven't had a chance to fish since I've been back in town
and really didn't realize how much I was taken in by the
sport until a couple of weekends ago. While driving in the
mountains, I went past several little streams and ponds that
were scattered with fly fishers. I got that funny little
feeling you get when you're exposed to something you really
enjoy and it made me want to go fishing.
Thank you again for a
fabulous experience! Take care and I'm really looking
forward to next year's trip.
P.S. Listening to you
and Maria tease and joke was a hoot and reminded me of the
gals I shoot with. So nice to be around other women who
enjoy the outdoors and participate in activities that are
often considered "a man's arena." I love walking on those
barriers that society has setup for us.

Hi Marla. Hope you are hauling in big ones! We had an easy trip home. Yesterday Eliot (age 12)and I traveled up to the Gunpowder and checked it out. Stopped in at the local fly shop (Backwater Angler) and got some flies that are working, and some advice. We are probably going to get waders and other equipment this week and try to fish next weekend. The Gunpowder looks great, I am however a bit concerned that their is only a relatively shore stretch of "good trout water" and it is heavily fished. Perhaps we can figure out how to get to some holes off the trodden path. I know you are very busy, so when you get a chance, would you email the photos of us fishing; I am not sure my wife believes we caught trout on flies! By the way, I did get the Thomas Ames book and it is really full of interesting information and great photos. Needless to say, I think we are hooked. In the next week or so we may go out on the Gunpowder with a guide, just to have his show us more river entry points, and to get some local tricks. We will probably take a fly tying course offered at the Backwater Angler. I have read a lot of your book. It is very good, very closely mirroring what you taught us on the river. And unlike the Orvis book, your's hits the key points without excess verbosity. And it is very funny! Thanks again for the swell time and great instruction, hope to get up there sometime in the future. Bob and Eliot Fenton, Baltimore, Maryland 07'

Hi Marla
Thank you very much for your generous guiding, instruction, hospitality,
& great company. You are a really good teacher and guide. Faye was
very sorry she missed the fishing and will definitely come up with me
next year. I would like to go on one of your trips, so keep me posted.
I think Chile would be wonderful.
I am going to tell Fred Albright to book you also. He would get a lot
out of your guiding. I will practice the 7x & 8x on the Tully and let
you know how I do. I look forward to my email photos.
big hug Moira Jeanne Fitzgerald, PA 07'
Marla -
Thank you very much for all that you did with my wife and
I.
She said that she truly enjoyed fishing but I was skeptical.... until I
went looking for your book and found that she was reading it in the
bathtub! Since, we have been fishing twice - once at the lake where she
landed a sizeable bluegill, and once back at the wall (after we stopped
at Classic and Custom to outfit her with waders and an A-5). I think
that she is doing great, and she is definitely excited.
Beginnings are finicky things and I can't
thank you enough for making hers exceptional.
Looking forward to
seeing you again in the spring sometime.

Marla,
It was a pleasure to
make your acquaintance and a delight fishing with you. The
experience was not only exhilarating but has given me a
better understanding of techniques and strategies that will
remain with me for a lifetime. Your patience, instruction
and last but not least cooking, was appreciated and will not
be forgotten. The following day Dennis and I fished the
Swift and hooked some fish and believe it or not, landed a
few, (arm not wrist). The food at Horizons was fantastic,
comparable to lunch. I will call you soon to make plans to
fish with you in the spring on the Farmington.
Thanks again

Hi Marla .
Just want to thank you again. I had great time not only actually fly fishing, but also all the aspects of it you taught me. your knowledge and patience are amazing. There's not many that can mix instruction and fun, but you are able to. You were right I now have a new passion for fly fishing. thanks again, your friend Jim Maciag, Ludlow, MA 2006'
P.S.The book is fantastic. your knowledge and wit showed
from page to page. And the information was very easy to
understand and apply.

Hi Marla:
Thank you for the photos,
I will show them to Kathy and Emily...
I was able to take Kathy
fishing today, she did GREAT. Tied her own tippet and flies and
was able to undo a few wind knots and tangles.
Kathy caught her first
fish on a nymph and dry fly. She caught several fish on the
Willimantic River TMA section and a few on the Natchaug River
State Park.
She had a great time and
we are looking forward to our trip to Colorado as well as our
next "date" to go fishing.
Thank you so much
for teaching her and Emily so that I can share my love of
fishing with them at a higher level now. David

Marla,
I had a great day on the river that begs for an encore!! If you
measure the day based on fish caught, then it was super. But when you
add in your outstanding instruction, all the gear (including those nice warm
socks), and the tasty lunch, that makes it unbeatable.
Thanks for your patience.

Hi Marla I'm at work now; no overtime for Wally tonight - Wally is bushed! Everyone here can't believe Freddy was actually fresh water fishing and had a great time. He had a terrific time, so that can only be attributed to your professional service. Last time I took him he left with a patch of rubber on the road when he got disgusted with loosing one fly after the other in the trees. He caught lots of fish and had an ear-to-ear grin today. I had a terrific time, but that goes without saying. I never experienced dry fly fishing like that in my life, ever! I will try to do more dry fly fishing around here locally when conditions permit, with my new skills learned from you. I will need to work on my mend of course. That second Browny I caught at church pool in that corner pocket was awesome. That big one that got away was a monster! I'll email you from home later so you can send me the digital photo. Thanks for a great day on the water! Also thanks for the great hospitality and great meals - WOW! I WILL be booking with you again in the future and look forward to that very much! I can't wait to crawl into my bed in about 2 hours - I'm beat! Best Regards, Tom Wahl of Connecticut, 2006' |
Marla, I just wanted to write and say thanks again, I had a great time in all your classes and have learned so much. You are an amazing teacher and I can not wait to get a job and join you on the water again. I LOVE FLY FISHING, I LOVE FLY FISHING I believe that's the tempo right.... ha ha. NO really I'm so glad you let me join the group and hope to see you soon. Ryan Thompson, of UCONN HUSKYS, CT ( 2006') P.S. I caught 7 today, more than anyone around me thanks to you.. |
Marla, I wanted to thank you for all that you did for us this past weekend. Besides transforming my wife from someone with only an interest, into someone who can't wait to practice casting and mending, you provided an atmosphere of visiting with an old friend. Barbara is proud, as am I, of all that she learned, and of the fish that she caught. You accomplished much in a short time. It is a testimony to your skill as instructor, passion for the sport, and ability to work with people. I want to thank you for the things you showed me as well. It means more to me than you know. I look forward to your refining our skills in 2005. Ed Coyle, Westbury, NY
Dear Marla
I meant to email while I was still in the heat of the day…but here I am finally.
THANK YOU MARLA. It was the very best of birthday presents.
You are a wonderful, patient, and obviously very successful teacher…with my catch of a beautiful rainbow.
I know what to do now, and have ordered my gear, small waders, even smaller boots,
stick with a point. Was able to buy Polaroid glasses, tippets,
get my reel moved over to left hand reeling, and more.
Can’t wait to get my boots and hit the river again.
I really had a grand time and so much appreciate
your staying with me until the fish was hooked.
Hope to receive pictures from you when you get time from fishing and cooking up storms.
I hope to spend a day with you again soon.
And again so very many thanks. It was one of the best days of my long, long, life!

Hi Marla:
My old
friend John and I had such a great time... It had been a
couple of years since John and I had been able to go fishing
together and you made the day one to remember... John can
not stop talking about our trip and how much he enjoyed you
as a guide (and what he learned)... Somehow, I think he has
forgotten about the bottle of Single Malt Scotch that he
owes me however........
Please
send the photos of our day on the East Branch/Chesterfield
Gorge of the Westfield River when you have the chance...
By the
way, I was fishing this past weekend (had some luck in the
Gorge) but when I went to the lower section I saw the
biggest Black Bear I have ever seen (I am glad I was in my
truck and not on the side of the river, I think I would have
Shit My Pants)... He just went up the road and then walked
across the river and into the woods. A Bear, Bald Eagle,
Wild Turkey, Native Brookes, Brown Trout and one monster
Rainbow that took my dry, rolled over and then spit it
out... What a great day...
See
you in October (or on the water if luck should have it) for
some great Fall Deerfield River Fishing.... (will that make
me a three-peet?) if not, then next spring....

I apologize for this belated and somewhat terse message. I believe no amount of words will sufficiently describe my experience being guided by you and zipping around in your new Marla-vehicle. In any event, I would like you to know that you are a great guide - friendly, patient, enthusiastic, accommodating, and extremely knowledgeable. Thank you for many fantastic spring Farmington trips and this spring was no different. I hope to fish with you again about the same time next year if not sooner. :-) Lawrence Tham, New York P.S. You may use the above as part of your testimonial.

Dear Marla,
I am sorry for the delay in writing; things have been very busy and hectic. Nonetheless, I wanted to express my thanks for what was an absolutely wonderful and most successful day. Successful in that your knowledge, guidance, awareness and patience made the experience one I never will forget. Under your watchful and patient eye it was easy to learn, not only the technique to fly fishing, but also the ability to “read” the river and to begin to understand the entomology surrounding fly fishing. While I think reading books to learn is paramount, the experience I gained with you in working the waters and developing my techniques are invaluable, something you simply can not gain in reading the “How To” books. Your critiques were insightful and always delivered in an intuitive and positive, reinforcing manner, coupled with a great sense of humor, making me feel comfortable, while I continued to learn and gain confidence in my own abilities. And of course, catching as many fish as I did, simply reinforced the positive results gained in learning and working with you.
I would be remiss in not thanking for the wonderful meals that you prepared and came along with the fly fishing experience. The coffee, fresh fruit and muffins were simply the beginning of the culinary experience and began the day beautifully. I must tell you that waiting for lunch, as you ran into town for the pans that somehow didn’t make the trip, was absolutely worth the less than 3 minutes it took you to drive into town, find a pan and get back to our lunch site, while setting a new land speed record. It was a culinary delight and I appreciated the time and care that you put into it. The cigar (what a wonderful selection to choose from) was simply the icing on the cake and capped a terrific meal.
I am sorry that my son was unable to make the trip and miss such an invaluable experience; however, we will both see you in May, 2004! Again thanks so much for the experience!
Best regards, Bruce Schrimmer Trumbull, CT |
Dear Marla; Roger & I had a wonderful time at camp and you were a joy to be with. Thank you so much for your expertise and knowledge as it must of helped us because we went fishing the next day (another very hot one) and I caught two beautiful fish ,one rainbow, one brookie. Roger's rod was not set up right(remember he borrowed yours) His was set up for a lefty like me and it made things awkward for him. Back at camp we were just getting ready to do some more fishing when a storm came up and it was a doozy. The pictures came of Roger & I and one more of Roger. Were there more to see? My computer crashed while I was at camp and Just got it back now. Again ----thanks and hugs to you also. With treasured thoughts -----------------Bob Pierce, Rutland, MA
Thanks alot for the lesson, I had a great time and enjoyed catching some fish. I went back to the same spot the next day and caught 2 more. Must be the lucky fly! I was wondering if you could send me the pictures of the fish when you have some time, i am really excited to show some people my catches. Thanks again for the lesson. Mike Smith, East Longmeadow, MA

Hey Marla!
Dear Marla,
Bumpy and I had the best
time! Your instruction and guiding are
fabulous!
We have been talking about Spring and our time on the river non-stop since we
left the fly shop on Thursday afternoon. There is no doubt in my mind that
Bumpy has the fishing bug...she looked lovingly at those disgusting
neoprenes
hanging on her hall closet door each time she walked by
last night! Tell me that is not the behavior of a total convert!!!
We
had fun. I am home now in Nahant, and with each canvas bag I
empty come more memories of the three of us sitting in the freezing classroom
above the fly shop, whizzing around from pool to pool in your Marlamobile and
picking our way over and around the rocks on the river. Bump was totally in
love with the flies, the river, the equipment, the supplies and the
most beautiful and delicious lunch.
Now, for that enormous fish I
caught .... what a thrill! The fish is now back to 17" in my little talks
about the two days with you. I can only assume that it will grow to yet
unheard of proportions. (will keep you posted). Thanks again for
everything. I look forward to chatting with you soon and will be keeping my
eye on your website...Toodles and
thanks, Wendy Munro,
Nahant, MA![]()
Marla....Thanks so much for the pictures! They are great! Especially the
special effects. I had a great day on the river and a great departure
from my normal work environment....very hard to truly relax, but you helped
out. I learned a lot about the caddis and giving them the action needed (I
think I can do it now) and using the strike indicators...........never did
it before because no one ever showed me.....I have read about it, I knew
about it, but sometimes it the "seeing" of it that matters. Hey, even my
gravel guards fit better and my feet are warmer because of you!
Thanks Again, I know that I will see you
around soon,

Hello Marla I have just returned from Bonaire. I left three days after you showed Frank and myself how to fly fish. Marla, I have fished my whole life and never knew about oxygen levels, temperature, and how to release fish properly. What you taught me has corrected many years of mishandling fish. I am looking forward to a guided trip with you in the near future. However it would be nice to see my instructor catch a fish. Marla, thanks for your personality, patience, and your expertise in fly fishing. Kurt Johnson, CT.
Thank you so much
for the great pictures. William and his dad really enjoyed seeing them. We had
an awesome time with you and those trout. William (6) really learned
a lot and has still got the fly fishing bug. We have gone for it and gotten him
a rod and reel. They were really helpful. William is practicing shore casting
at this time, until we can completely outfit him and us for adventures in the
river.
Again, thank you and I hope your trip to Labrador is a success!!!
Best

Marla,
We all had two wonderful days on the Farmington River. This was our second trip
with you as our guide, mentor, comedienne, and teacher. We were up against
kayakers who seemed to enjoy paddling through our feeding zones.... (hmmmmmm,
maybe they should have a lesson or two with you and then they will see how the
game goes!) and the local legendary Dave of Classic and Custom's wonderful and
gifted fly-tying abilities. Along with the entertaining and terrific
instructions (yes, I did understand all you were patiently showing me). We were
truly spoiled by your caring and talented cuisine both at breakfast and
lunchtime, we went away with an awesome experience. We look forward to getting
together again soon. We talk about you all the time to our family, friends and
coworkers. Take care and continue with the great job you are doing.

"My brother and I have booked Marla twice in the past
year. In November we took the lesson. I learned so much more from one day
with her than a whole year of reading and teaching myself. I've caught fish
on fly every time I've gone out since the day I met her.
In May, we went out with Marla on the Farmington TMA. The weather, the
scenery and especially the fishing were truly exceptional. She knows how to
put you on the fish and away from the crowds. I highly recommend the experience." Hi Marla!
I wanted to thank you again for a great day on the Farmington last Friday.
To say I learned a great deal would be an understatement! I wrote down notes
in my fishing journal when I got home. Wow! I still can't get over how many
fish I either caught, or lost...!!! Many thanks for your patience. I'm
going to try and get back down to the Farmington at some point.
Many thanks again. Take care, John Husted, Westwood, MA.
P.S.
I'm working on my wife to do a 2 day stint with you next year...as we
discussed! I'll let you know what comes of it...
Marla,
I wanted to thank you for your instruction, knowledge and patience in
spending a good amount of time with myself, being that it was only my
fourth time fly fishing. Jim and Vinny, the fly fishing veterans, were quite
impressed with your fly selection and the ability to locate fish. I've
been with my father-in-law and brother-in-law on a few guided trips and
it never compared to the attention-to-detail that you displayed that day.
Besides the fly fishing supplies and instructions you provided, the strong coffee, the tasty muffins, the awesome lunch, the scenic car tour of the Farmington and the great digital photographs were things that we still talk about. Thanks again for the wonderful fishing experience, instruction and a great sense of humor. "Fo'get about it!"

Marla,
Thanks for another great day on the scenic Farmington.
Kerry and I had a great time. As you did on our first outing,
you put us into some great spots and eager fish.
That brown that came out of the water after my ant will
remain a memory for a long time.
It must have been one of the 'wilds', it was beautiful.
Thanks again, Jeremy and Kerry

Yesterday was great! The fundamentals were so important and you covered
so much ground - I now understand so much more than before - albeit, just
the beginning I know. I got home and took out my tackle to check what I

dressing and the hatch guide - what a bible that is!
It was so generous of you to offer that I meet you some morning on the
river for some practice. Again - The class was great and I will happily recommend (promote) your services. Thanks so much for extending your day and giving me the one on one. All the best, Claire, Pawling, NYMARLA,

Marla, thank you for a wonderful day. My wife, Margaret, and I
enjoyed your instruction and your company very much. You have
taken us a long way in learning about fly fishing in just one
day. We feel that we now know enough to venture into this
wonderful sport. I look forward to seeing the pictures you took
of us. Thanks again.. W. Joseph Yu, MD
Marla, If anyone wants to speak with a reference, please give
them my name. I will be very excited to tell them how wonderful
you are with a child!!(and an adult, too!). Russell Iuliano
Chris and I had a great time yesterday. Chris revealed that he
wants to be a fishing guide when he grows up. I can't think of a
better thing! I hope it was as much fun for you, as it was for
us. Tom Zoeller...."It
was alot of fun for me also"![]()
MARLA BLAIR: FEATURED GUEST FLY FISHER/TIER AT RIS UNITED FLY TYERS © by Anna minicucci©2000 Save the date, time, place; be there early, prepared to meet, and listen to a dynamo among fly fishing circles. On Wednesday, January 3, 2001, United Fly Tyers of Rhode Island will feature Marla Blair, owner of Marla Blairs Fly Fishing Guide and Instruction. Blairs guide service covers the Swift, Westfield, Deerfield, and Farmington Rivers. Her persona as guide, casting instructor, and fly tier brims with energetic knowledge about those river sites where she executes casting instruction and guiding using her favorite dry flies, crickets, caddiss, grasshoppers, ants, and beetles. The flies should be, The more ugly, colorful, and bigger, the better, says Blair. Add to that the fun and class she exudes all are ingredients in a recipe for an enjoyable and enlightening evening. We had the pleasure of meeting Marla, last year, at the annual Festival of International Women's Fly Fishers(IWFF) held in Stratton, VT. Her exuberance which is contagious, and equal to her professional look-act-alike personification of Bette Midler used to entertain and raise funds for charity functions. Marla has been the subject of countless newspaper features and a fly fishing commercial. Theres little doubt about Marlas multi talented attributes which include: writing for outdoor publications, newsletters, internet sites, newspapers, cable television appearances. lectures, and fishing shows. Blair is a Federation of Fly Fishers (FFF) Certified Fly Casting instructor, and received her certification from Lou Tabory. Shes board member of Pioneer Valley Trout Unlimited Chapter, and an IWFF member and newsletter contributor. Marla makes her home in Ludlow, MA, where her U. S. mail deliveries are received later than most, and where she can hunker down to her real estate business during winter months when ice thickens sweet water angling sites. A busy woman? Yes, Marla Blair is busy, but ask her to help out with a project and shell be there. To catch a glimpse of Marla and what she does, log on to her web site at: http://www.marlablair.com/. The United Fly Tyers of Rhode Island meets at the Aspray Boat House, in Pawtuxet Village. Doors open at 6:30 pm for fly tying instruction for beginners, intermediate and advanced tiers, and will be followed by Marla Blair, the evenings guest presenter.
